Q: Many years ago I suffered from sciatica, which left me with a few numb toes. I have tried various treatments and exercises but the numbness is spreading, affecting my balance. The areas tingle when touched or massaged. Doctors ignore it. I am 70 – is it too late to put it right?

A: The sciatic nerve is the longest in the body, running from the lower spine down to the toes. Nerves need a good blood supply, rich in nutrients, and a lack of certain key nutrients – such as B vitamins, sodium and potassium – may stop them working and render them unable to repair themselves.

Taking 100mg of a vitamin B complex twice daily, with vitamin C and iron, could help. As we get older our bodies take longer to heal, but exercise will help, so walk regularly, use stairs whenever you can, if you can, and keep moving. This will stimulate the muscles that are served by the sciatic nerve, which in turn will be stimulated and become stronger and perhaps more responsive to your demands. Keep up the massage, too – it will work on the small branches of the nerve and you may find that slowly the tingling becomes a continuous signal and you have your old foot back.
